JUNE BOOK CLUB

Well.... I didn't end up in the hospital from a mutinous attack of flying objects. The wait is over for those of you whose curiosity has not yet been satisfied as to what and who the Surprise Presentation of April was all about. Actually, I think you may have enjoyed my Surprise Presentation!
Yes, I say "my" because Yours Truly is exactly who you were met by for the April gathering of our Literary Society. I just didn't tell you that I donned by protective shield under my clothes in case things got too far out of hand in the displeasure department. If nothing else, I know the food was at least worth it! HEE HEE
You can admit it . . . how great it was that I have Gold Crown connections and pulled off a presentation that any "teacher" worth their salt would be proud of, huh???? We enjoyed each other's company, had some really good laughs, shed a few heartfelt tears . . . what more could you ask for in an evening among friends?? Well, let's not go there.....
The evening, in my opinion, was a treat. . . it was movie night! The screen lit up with the triumphant (and true) story of Brad Cohen.  Accused of being a troublemaker in school, only to learn, finally, that he had Tourette's Syndrome. Did that stop him???  Noooooooo, he fought the looks, the taunts, and all the incredible odds against him to become... a teacher. Well worth a look for any of you interested. . . Hallmark Hall of Fame presents "Front of the Class."
Onward and upward . . . actually, we are going to go downward for our next adventure. We are quite the globetrotters, I must say. Our next pilgrimage will lead us to a few years back, well okay, QUITE a few years back, to a time that was life changing for those involved in this influential novel. I have some friends serving a mission in this very diverse and much loved country. A country of humble, gentle, committed souls. . .much different now than it was at the time of our next read. Welcome to South Africa!
The book for June will be presented by Camille Jensen. A compelling novel about a black man's country under white man's law, "Cry, The Beloved Country" by Alan Paton, rises out of South Africa. A work of searing beauty, it tells a deeply moving story of a Zulu pastor, Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom.
A favorite among many readers, it makes them feel an uncanny connection to three things: the land, an old black rural priest searching in a corrupt city for his son, and an old white rural man confronting the loss of his son. "It is a story of the beauty and terror of human life, and it cannot be written again because it cannot be felt again."
Join us as we once again broaden our horizons, add gray matter between our ears and renew our "beloved" friendships.
