RELIEF SOCIETY News From West Valley 4th Ward NEWSLETTER

For those who were able to get to the Heber Valley Retreat, we think you will agree that it was really a beautiful place to be! We enjoyed the fresh air, clear blue skies, and lots of visiting, as well as lots of good food and fun activities. The obstacle course was enjoyed by many participants, as well as many encouraging onlookers. Thanks to all who had anything to do with the advance preparations and production (especially Dorene and Barbara) and for Bishop & Marva Mathis (who brought up the equipment trailer), and Bishop Mathis, Brother Hainsworth, Brother Magnuson and Kyle Holdaway for cooking our breakfast on Saturday!!  PLUS, all the help and assistance provided by those who went.
Our next Night Relief Society Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 14, at 6:30 pm. You can expect a wonderful and informative meeting.

HEBER JOURNAL

Side-splitting gales of laughter broke out when Heather Marshall responded to her second challenge in the game “Curses.” Her first challenge was to try to “explain her way out of a speeding ticket.” Though we tried hard to follow her reasoning as she sped through a herd of sheep and killed some, we weren’t convinced she had been successful in convincing the cop of her innocence.
Indeed, when it was finally her turn again 20 minutes later she proved us right. Her second challenge was “tell your fellow inmates why you are in prison.” She said, “Well, I was speeding through a herd of sheep . . . killed a few.” You may have had to be there, but we were glad we were there at that moment, laughing so hard!

BOOK CLUB
Dear Biblios:
I warned you! Huh, Huh . . . Didn't I tell you not to miss July's journey?? That month brought us one of those rare treats and it was a truly rewarding experience. I know you are all trying to dig around and find out if you still have a copy of the July newsletter so you can refresh your memories on what book we did that month. . . .
"Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words." ---Jeremiah 18:2.
Our place of meeting was just as good as going to the "potter's house," because the potter was there . . . in the flesh! Our read for the month was Remembering Isaac: The Wise and Joyful Potter of Niederbipp. We received our presentation by the author himself, Ben Behunin. A million thanks to Camille Jensen for facilitating this captivating evening. We were inspired and motivated by his message and particularly intrigued with the "story behind the story" as he told of the experiences that led him to write this wonderful story.
You will recall that this was Book One of a series. Book Two, Discovering Isaac, is already out and Book Three is out this fall.
Well worth the read as we get closer to that time of year that finds us snuggled up with some good reads a little more often.
It was a great evening shared among friends . . .just remember, we are all in rotation on the potter's wheel.

NOTE CHANGE OF PLANS FOR SEPTEMBER: Dorene a first time participant to Book Club (and probably her last) is going to share one of the few books she has read- unusual if you know Dorene.   (I (Dorene) took the time to read this book 3 years ago when I was in Virginia right after my grandson was born- enough said about that!!!)  The book to be presented is Kite Runner by author Khaled Hosseini-.  It is a tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal, that takes us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the atrocities of the present. The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, Kite Runner is about the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption, and it is also about the power of fathers over sons-their love, their sacrifices, their lies.  This beautifully written first novel presents a glimpse of life in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion and introduces richly drawn, memorable characters. Quiet, intellectual Amir craves the attention of his father, a wealthy Kabul businessman. Kind and self-confident Hassan is the son of Amir's father's servant. The motherless boys play together daily, and when Amir wins the annual kite contest, Hassan offers to track down the opponent's runaway kite as a prize. When he finds it, the neighborhood bullies trap and attack him, as Amir stands by too terrified to help. Their lives and their friendship are forever changed, and the memory of his cowardice haunts Amir as he grows into manhood.  This gripping story of personal redemption will capture readers' interest.

Book Club
Dear Bookers:
My mom used to send me to my room, well okay . . . I was grounded THEN sent to my room, when I was out of line. (I think she would like to do the same sometimes now.  (HEE HEE)   At this moment, it is the eleventh hour on the newsletter . . . I have been what is known as a slacker . . . I believe Peggy would like to send me to my room. Being grounded was a significant part of my youth . . . but we won't go there. Suffice it to say, however, I have a great love of reading which was developed immensely during these extended periods of "time out" so generously given by my parents. They introduced me and my siblings to books early on, so I had a real taste of what the written word had to offer.  You give me the time to delve into its world and I am a kid in a candy store with an endless budget! So, I say to Peggy . . . . bring it on, I could really use the break!!  HEE HEE
What an abundant amount of "grey matter" is there for the taking . . . just by picking up a few dead trees or some cotton fiber and looking at a bunch of pigment formed into some very specific shapes. VoilĂ , you have all kinds of adventure, travel, learning opportunities, mystique, suspense and . . . perspectives. Good example . . . the great expansion to our perspective, understanding and compassion of the time period of slavery that was so deftly delivered by Faun Chidester at our June Book Club. We all left in awe of the people and their experiences as Faun captured our attention with her review of "Am I Not a Man?" The Dred Scott Story.  Many thanks, Faun, for bringing these souls and their struggles into our consciousness and making us better people for it. A great discussion, with a great bunch of friends! We not only learn about the impact of people on our lives, be we also get to spread our wings occasionally to the animal kingdom. We have had a few encounters with this part of our existence. Talk about variations in behavior and the wide spectrum of lessons to be learned from this species! Think of them . . . remember the Crow in The Golden Verses and its sequel ??  How about the Snake in the HarryPotter series? What of our adventurous ride with The Black Stallion, and who could forget our encounter with the world of horse racing when we were captivated with the sport's legend, Seabiscuit?!We have even made acquaintance with bees and learned about their "secret lives!" Are you with me here?? HEE HEE
This next ride is going to be like none other . . .saddle up for a horrendous glass-shattering, bonesplintering, ligament-lynching meeting with a megaton truck . . . and that's only in the first 25 pages!!  Seriously!! There will be NO dozing during this read!
It is a gripping, intense tale of life-changing happenings for the characters we meet . . . Grace, her four-legged friend, Pilgrim, there's her dad, Robert, her mom, Annie and the one person who arrives to heal them all in mind, body and spirit . . .Tom Booker.
Join us for a compelling August read . . . grab a few sugar cubes, maybe some oats and take on the challenge with "The HorseWhisperer" by Nicholas Evans. It is an engaging read that will be reviewed with her own soothing words and gentle touch as Heather Marshall takes us through this well-written novel as Tom works to rebuild all the lives that have been shattered by the accident, using his mystical skills with horses. We even get to take a magnificent journey exploring earth and massive sky of Rocky Mountain Montana. If you've never been there . . . you'll get a "big sky" introduction to it . . . especially if you decide to pick up the movie and see the visual rendition of the story. I must say, Montana is an amazing place of beauty. Meet you at the Booker Stables!
