Obituary for David C Burns (Father of Ward Member)

David Charles Burns

 

January 17, 1920 ~ October 1, 2012

Our cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away in the arms of his devoted son at the VA Nursing Home on October 1, 2012. He filled his 92 years on this earth with service to his country, his church, and his family. David was the first born to David Charles Burns Sr. and Minnie Nelson in Salt Lake City on January 17, 1920. David grew up in the Sugarhouse area. He served his country during World War II as a Surgical Technician on the USS Comfort, South Pacific Theater. He married Dora Paystrup in the in the Salt Lake Temple on June 16, 1947. Together, they raised their two children Arvin and Dorene in several different locations. David tenderly cared for Dora at their home during the last nine years of her life after she had suffered a debilitating stroke. Dora passed away in 1995.
His occupation for most of his life was a typesetter for the newspaper industry. In Farmington, New Mexico he worked for the local newspaper but also worked the Stake Farm during the day. He also worked as a full-time custodian for the LDS Church, Monument Stake, SLC. David’s favorite thing to do was to take his family for long scenic drives destination unknown. After Dora passed away he continued those drives with his son. Together they traveled many miles and destinations. He also loved doing genealogy work. David served in many church callings. His favorite of all was as a Boy Scout Leader in many locations.
He is survived by his two children: Arvin and Dorene (Gary) Lynch; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and his Sister-in-law, Lois (SLC). A viewing will be held, October 4, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home, 700 South Foothill Blvd. VA Campus Wahlen Way, SLC. Funeral services will be held at the VA Nursing Home (same address as above) between 10:00-11:30 am on Friday October 5th. A viewing will be held one hour before the funeral services 9:00-10:00 a.m.
