We wanted to make you are aware of the passing of Afton Atkinson on Friday, February 17. Afton Atkinson is the mother of Gaylen Atkinson, a long time member of our ward. Gaylen and his wife Janeal are currently serving an inner-city mission.

Afton Gwenda Edgel Atkinson, 96, died 17th of February 2012 at The Golden Living Center of causes incident to age.
Afton was born February 9, 1916 in West Jordan, Utah the daughter of Franklin James Edgel and Florence Adelaide Mildred Warner. She married Vaughn Robert Atkinson December 11, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and subsequently moved to various regions of the country due to her husband's military service. They were married 53 years, resided in Sandy, and raised six children together. Afton devoted her life to nurturing and caring for her family. She loved music, and made sure her children received musical training. She served in various callings, especially that of a teacher, in the LDS church. She loved the outdoors, growing beautiful flowers and delicious fruits and vegetables, which she shared with family, neighbors and friends.
Survived by daughters, Gwenda (DeWayne) Sperry, Shauna (Larry) Rhodes, Carla (Dan) Jenkins; sons, Gaylen (Janeal) Atkinson, Monte (Gail) Atkinson, Bryce (Lou) Atkinson; 25 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; brother Val Stanton Edgel, sister Clytie Edgel Barber. Preceded in death by her husband Vaughn; sisters Delsa Edgel Owen and Daphne Edgel Child; brothers Silvion Frank Edgel and Max Edgel.
Funeral services 25 February 2012, 12 Noon, in the Hillcrest 1st Ward Chapel, 8485 South 1000 East. Friends may call Saturday at the ward 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, West Jordan City Cemetery.
