From Our West Valley Fourth Ward News JUNE 2010

RELIEF SOCIETY NEWS

It’s hard to believe that school is almost over and June is here! We had an interesting and informative evening listening to Sister Dorene Lynch share her knowledge about stretching our dollars and great places to find ‘deals’ in this area. As always, she provided great handouts. Robyn Burton opened her home for an additional opportunity to learn about someone’s couponing hints and ideas a week later. Thanks, Robyn.
A few of us were able to get to the Jordan River Temple for our R. S. Temple Day. We left about 10:45 am and opted for lunch afterwards. Join us on Tuesday, June 15. We can do morning or afternoon. Lunch is not mandatory.
The R. S. Activity this month will be centered on a “Food Challenge and some interesting learning activities supplemented by information by the famous TV personality, Dr. Oz. It will be held on Tuesday, June 8th at 6:30 pm.. Come enjoy learning with friends learning from each other.
Plan ahead for our Heber Valley Camp in August“Recharge Your Batteries: Refresh, Renew and Recharge. We are excited that we will be able to go once again! Those who went two years ago well remember the fun we had. The obstacle course includes a zip line that requires a $5 fee. The only other fee would be $5 per guest to help cover their meals. The age limit is 11 years young. Anyone older qualifies without an upper age limit.  Just a reminder to those of you who will be inviting guests: Church standards regarding modest sportswear and Word of Wisdom are to be adhered to by anyone who goes up there. Hopefully that will not become an issue, but thought this might need mentioning beforehand because it is something that we all need to be aware of. The dates are August 13th and August 14th. WATCH FOR SIGN-UPS IN RELIEF SOCIETY; PRIMARY, AND YOUNG WOMEN OR CONTACT ONE OF THE R.S.PRESIDENCY.
Our Summer Read-a-thon will have a bonus during June (50 pts.) for those who read a biography. Sister Stott and Sister Barker have some fun things planned for both adults and children during the summer. A competition between adults and children??? Hmmmm. Wait and see. Get the information which will be forthcoming.
Have you checked out our Ward R. S. blog? www.wv4th.blogspot.com
We are pleased that Ken and Kay Neeley are doing so much better. We hope that many of you who are experiencing a downturn in health will be encouraged this month with an upturn. Please let Sister Williams be aware of new or existing challenges you may learn of during your visiting teaching or other visits
Our condolences and sympathies go out to Sister Margot Cutchen on the recent death of her husband, Brother Bill Cutchen. Another long-time member of our ward, Sister Emelia Ward, will also be missed. shared from their own family resources for missionary dinners, Emelia Ward’s funeral dinner, the recent ward social and other service to members and non-members alike.

BOOK CLUB

Dear Biblios:
Thank heaven for the Elders/High Priest Quorum who were so kind as to rescue us from that mountain of turkey doo-doo I found myself in at last month's writing. Those fine, blessed souls were able to finish up the haul and save my weary back from that all too familiar twitch. How nice it was to have such "slave labor" at our disposal . . . but more on that later. HEE HEE
I didn't even have to break away from my Barcalounger to enjoy the cozy little evening we had for April Book Club. It was held right within my very four walls and was a pleasure beyond measure.
I think the topic proved to be quite inspiring to all who attended and/or read the book. Every once in awhile, you run across those finds those put you to thinking and encourage you to do something different or better. We were given that encouragement with a wonderful presentation from Barbara Stott as she laid open the life of Jack and Laurel Cooper, and the inspiring legacy they left in their "Wednesday Letters." Thanks, Barb, for a really fun evening getting to know the Cooper's.
We all appreciate the efforts of everyone who participate in one way or another to make our Book Club nights so entertaining, rewarding and worthwhile!
We get introduced to so MANY intriguing and motivating characters. Our June book will prove no different . . . may I introduce you to Sam Blow. The name may give some of you a little ping, if you were very attentive in your school days while sitting in your American History class (uh, no... that would not be me. HEE HEE). You recall my mention of "slave labor?" You may know Mr. Blow by his more common and notorious name . . . Dred Scott.
Oh now, that is ringing a little more familiar bell, huh!!?? It’s an amazing story of one man's fight for equality during Colonial times: of hardship, struggle and extraordinary experiences, propelling this one man on his quest for freedom in a time when slavery was very much a part of the fabric of our country. His story is brought to life by our own State's Attorney General as author and covers a sweeping panorama of history. One man that brought about a huge impact on where our country was heading, putting Abraham Lincoln on the road to becoming President and creating the emancipation proclamation.
It is time to go back in time, have a seat at our desk, and learn what we are all about and how we got where we are. In the capable hands of Faun Chidester as presenter, our June book is "Am I Not a Man?" The Dred Scott Story byMark L. Shurtleff. Since I am one who is quite history-challenged, I look forward to having my horizons broadened and a little more gray-matter added to the ol' cerebrum!
Please get out your paper and pencil, make a note of it and begin . . .

MAY BOOK CLUB
I am moving s--l--o--w this day as I am reminded of how not so young I am anymore. Oh! Then there is this rebellion going on in my ligaments and tendons as they taunt me with reminders that I was not able to shovel enough snow to keep myself even remotely in shape. I have been preparing for "May Flowers" and other such plant growth, enviably eyeing my Barcalounger as I passed it each time I realized I needed some tool or another that hasn't made it outside yet. In my mind's eye, I had me kicking back with nice cold refreshment by my side, a good book in hand, and the sounds of spring echoing softly in the background. Then . . . it all comes crashing back to reality when you feel that little twitch in your back that reminds you you're up to your knees in that mountain of turkey doo-doo and mulch that NEVER seems to grow smaller no matter how many loads you have hauled away from it!
When day is done and you are a Biblioholic, you realize how grateful you are to have good books, good friends and an evening out to look forward to. You certainly don't have to "persuade" me otherwise, and we definitely got our boost when we were schooled on the power of persuasion and its effects by the masterful delivery Pam Magnuson gave of the March book pick, Persuasion by Jane Austen. Thank you, Pam, for a most pleasant and interesting evening!
We so enjoyed our stay in England, we have decided to go back and take in a little more of the culture. We will take a stroll through Victorian England with the well-known novelist, Charles Dickens. May will bring us The Pickwick Papers, a real work of literature that is brilliantly written and touts itself as Dickens's first novel.
It is a funny, warm-hearted and enchanting tale of Samuel Pickwick and his fellow Pickwick Club members.   Now, right off the bat, we can relate to the Club! Huh???!!!! We will encounter the joys and troubles of travel, and beware of the unscrupulous people, and what's this.... a prison stay??!!! It may be a world now long lost, but to be sure, we may learn a few things about how to cherish the good and simple things.
Our travel guide for this tour will be Merrily Thorne. She will handily keep our fellowship together through all kinds of scrapes and adventures. Save up your shillings and board the ship . . . we're headin' for a visit with the Brits!

April 2010

Relief Society
We really enjoyed the Stake Relief Society birthday program featuring Gary & Joy Lundberg and the luncheon that followed. Thank you all once again for your generous donations to The Road Home/Family Support Center. Thanks especially to Brother Mark Nielsen and Brother Justin Griffith for volunteering to fill an assignment to help in the nursery!
What does the game of Clue have to do with Relief Society? Come and find out on Tuesday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. We are having another Read-a- Thon this year from May 1 to August 31. We have some fun incentives, contests and goals to encourage reading in our homes this spring and summer. You are all invited to take part in the read-a- thon, whether you're single or not, and whether you're a child, a youth or an adult.
If you like the game of Clue you will love the kick-off activity for the read-a-thon. We'll be working in small groups or families to find the clues we need to escape from the Haunted Library Mansion before being caught in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong person.   There will be a tour of the library for anyone who is interested, and refreshments will be provided.
We'll meet in the Relief Society Room at 6:30 p.m., and then proceed to the Hunter Library for the activity. Bring yourselves, your families and friends. It will take all of us working together to make the great escape!
Plan to come with us to the Temple on Tuesday, April 20.
It is officially spring and time to start getting out into our yards and gardens. Take this opportunity to enjoy the beauties around us and the miracle of planting and cultivating.
We wish all those who are experiencing health challenges at this time to know of our love and concern for them. We hope you can join with us in our Relief Society meetings soon.

 APRIL BOOK CLUB
Do you realize we are already a quarter of the way through this year? What's up with that? We've met three times in glorious fun and laughs, added to our "gray matter," and tantalized our taste buds. We really couldn't ask for a more rounded experience! Okay, so maybe some of that “rounding" is coming from the great treats we have, but overall it has been a rewarding time for us all. February winged in on "Cupid" and gave us all a good shot of high drama as Janeal Atkinson gave us a superb tour through the labyrinths of the justice system and introduced us to he evil-doers and the power rangers of "The Associates" by John Grisham. Thank you, Janeal, for an intriguing evening and a well planned presentation . . . very interesting ending to that story!
We cover so many interesting characters an personalities in our books. Our travels have beenbroad . . . sometimes in distance and others closer to home. All without leaving the comforts of our little community. We've covered almost as many topics as National Geographic or the Discovery Channel, and there are still volumes and volumes of stuff out there for the taking. I don't believe a day goes by that I don't hear or see something about a book that sounds just too incredible to pass by . . . and leaves me wishing I had more time to read them.
Our next book is one of those . . . something I heard about some time ago and thought "that would be a good read." The form of communication covered in this book is as old as Methuselah. An art that has been somewhat lost with the rise of the internet and technology. . . . quite some time before the keyboard came to be so common. I refer to the time when we actually picked up a pen, some stationery and wrote . . . .letters.
We will become acquainted with the Cooper family. Jack and Laurel, the parents, are rare souls who have led quiet but exceptional lives. There is daughter Samantha who discovers a hidden trove of letters . . . letters holding a shocking secret. A son, Matthew, who is a driven businessman, but whose life is empty. A second son, Malcolm, troubled and in conflict with the law. This delightful book might even inspire you to get back to letter writing in its purest form. Please join us for a recounting of an interwoven legacy of trials and triumphs left by two of the characters. It's entertainment with edge, heart, adventure, longing, mystery and honor. . .
Barbara Stott will present The Wednesda Letters by Jason F. Wright. He should sound familiar to you . . . also author of the "Christmas Jar" book . . . one we especially liked. We have such a great time . . . I know you are all nearly out the door on a race to the library or bookstore. Get movin' and see you there!

BOOK CLUB
My Fellow Biblios:
You've heard the phrase for March, "in like a lion, out like a lamb?" I think we could use some of that "lion" to stir things up a bit. Thank heaven we have the Book Club to turn away the doldrums of our not so wintery winter season. As biblioholics, this kind of weather really feeds our addiction (at least one of them!) . . . so, it is one happy note against the blahs of a lackluster winter. We have had some enticing reads so far and we can count on our fellow bookers to keep us going in the right direction. In fact, being part of our Book Club is sort of like falling into a large vat of literary chocolate. White, milk, dark (my favorite) or anything in between, it is a luscious, can't get enough, "died and gone to heaven" sort of feeling. HEE HEE.
We look forward to our getting together, catching up, and renewing friendships each month. I, personally, will thank you for your support in January when I presented "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society." What an interesting and enlightening book that is. If you haven't read it yet, it is well worth picking up. I didn't see anyone get up and leave, and there weren't any flying objects heading my way, so I will assume that my presentation went over well enough. HEE HEE
Now, are you ready for some collywobbles? I don't think you will have to be "persuaded" to read the book pick for March. Our very capable and well-read Pam Magnuson will present it. I know you already have your library card at the ready . . .. March book is Persuasion by Jane Austen. We are all familiar with her works and what a talented author she is. I'm sure this will be no exception.
This novel is actually the last one completed before her death in 1818. It does have its heroine in Anne Elliott and you have to have the dashing lost love, Captain Frederick Wentworth. The power of persuasion is quite a talent, and can be used for good or bad. In this case, it led Anne to take quite a life changing direction that would bring her heartache, and one that would take some time to negotiate its way back to mending it. An enchanting love story, about social climbing, finances of social elites, and how marriage agreements were struck. Placed in England, it will give us a most interesting insight to many characters and to the period of upper class English in the early 1800's.
Get those teacakes baked, grab your favorite hydration, spin those wheels to the nearest library and settle in for a nice comfy read.

From West Valley FourthWard NEWS- Febuary 2010

Relief Society
We would like to thank all of you who participated in any way with our January Visiting Teaching Conference! Almost every visiting teacher was able to come to her personal interview with a member of the Relief Society presidency and discuss her personal ministry with the sisters she has been “called to serve.” Many were also involved with the skit and song and telling of personal experiences after a light dinner in the cultural hall on Tuesday. We appreciated Bishop Mathis taking time to come and share his thoughts with us as well. We appreciate our visiting teachers and the efforts they make to visit each sister in the ward area each month. Keep up your good work!!  Thanks to our Young Women, Tiffany Bentley and Kaitlyn Rosenlof, as well as Brother Butts, Brother Stott, and Brother Eccles for “manning” the nursery. We also appreciated help in setting up and taking down the tables and chairs and moving the piano. Thanks, too, to those who help us contact the sisters prior to our monthly meetings. We depend on so many of you! Mark your calendars for another interesting and uplifting Relief Society meeting on Tuesday, February 9. More information will be coming in the near future. Also mark the following Tuesday, February 16 for our Relief Society Temple Day. Come join with us on Sundays at 3:10 pm for thought-provoking messages and camaraderie. It’s great to see each other and feel of the Spirit in our meetings.
We would like to express our well wishes to our sisters who are unable to join with us at our Relief Society meetings and activities and hope that you know we miss you and think of you. May our Heavenly Father bless you with your daily challenges and bring you peace and comfort and relief from pain.

BOOK CLUB
Dear Book Lovers:
We are already a whole month into 2010 and the whole hoopla of a new year is just a small blip on the radar. Maybe we are a year wiser than this time last year because we were blessed enough to have participated in some great offerings in the written word section of "Life's Library." I count myself lucky as I am not completely bald after having prepared the review of "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society." As I write this, I am just putting on the finishing touches to that presentation, as I deliver tonight. I can't give you any juicy tidbits about how it went since I don't have the power of clairvoyance. Next time, I guess.
This year holds much promise of increasing our "gray matter." February will wind us up with on of our favorite authors . . . John Grisham. We know there are good people and bad people we walk through life with . . . side by side. And sometimes, good people do bad things and vice versa. Then throw lawyers in the mix and . . . we won't even go there! (No offense intended . . . but if taken, well....... sue me! HEE HEE!) Janeal Atkinson on The Associate will gift us with a review. Grisham is such a talent and what a pleasure to read. We follow the story of a Yale Law School student, Kyle, who is headed for dreams of a public service job . . .UNTIL shadowy figures blackmail him with a video tape to force him into service for their own corrupt ends.
There is an $800 billion lawsuit at stake over a military contract on newly designed aircraft. There are powerful Wall Street law firms. A secret file room. SOMEONE has to handle the passing of these secrets and Kyle's assignment is to spy on his new employer on behalf of his blackmailer.
His dark secret could destroy his dreams, his career, even his life. Kyle is caught between the criminal forces manipulating him, the FBI, and his own law firm's malignant conspiracy. With all his intellect, cunning, and bravery, he still may not be able to escape alive.
As you can see, this is a real page-turner with David-against-Goliath angle. It is a great February fluster buster, and put into the very capable hands of Janeal we won't be disappointed. You won't want to miss this thriller! It's a new year . . . now dust off that library card and sign up for court duty! Til Next Time . . . .

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS:

Lessons from Haiti
On January 12 tragedy struck the small island country of Haiti, the poorest in the Western hemisphere. The magnitude 7 earthquake is one of the top ten worst earthquakes, in terms of lives lost,in recorded history – and in the worst five since
1900.
Utah emergency planners view a magnitude 7 earthquake on the Wasatch Front as a worst-case scenario. We probably don’t anticipate tens of thousands of foreign troops here providing aid. We don’t expect to lose tens or hundreds of thousands of lives. We do expect to lose thousands of homes and other buildings. We do expect a large number of
wounded people urgently requiring basic medical care. We must not be complacent.
As Haiti’s earthquake this year, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami, the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake, and countless other disasters have shown, people are vulnerable at all times and in all places to catastrophic natural disasters and, of course, to lesser emergencies. It behooves us to be prepared, as much as we can be individually, as families, and as a community.
I want to just pass on the following item from the West Valley CERT website and echo its sentiments. . .
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti and all those affected by the earthquake last week. The disaster brings into focus the painful reality of our own fragile situation. We've heard for years "it's not a question of if; it's a question of when a major quake will occur on the Wasatch Front." The other painful reality that the situation in Haiti brings into focus is the absolute need for us to be self reliant following a disaster. The rule used to be "72 hours.” As we've seen in this case, and others before, 72 hours just isn't long enough for relief to arrive, organize and deploy. Seven to ten days is far more realistic.
Fox 13 has an excellent story on our own vulnerability to an earthquake and what we should expect afterward. Go to http://www.fox13now.com/news/kstu-utahpreparing-for-an-earthquake-inwasatch, 0,2807054.story for the story.
The State of Utah also has great information on the Be Ready Utah website at http://www.beready.utah.gov/.
Www.ready.gov is another great source of information. If you haven't done so recently, now would be an excellent time to check out your family preparedness kits and rotate out anything that's expired.
Our next course starts February 11. Preregistration is still open. The full course information is on the CERT home page http://www.wvcert.org/.
