Arlo Ward

1922 ~ 2009

Arlo Ward, age 86, passed away February 24, 2009 in West Valley City, Utah. Arlo was born May 4, 1922 to Wilford Ward and Ethel Jacobs. He was the last surviving member of his family, one of 14 children. He was raised in Newdale and Rexburg, Idaho. He was married on February 7, 1942 to the love of his life, Emma Emelia Muir. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 6, 1956. He and Emelia have been together for 67 years. They moved to Granger in 1963. Arlo served in Europe during World War II as a half track driver in the 12th Armored Division, known as the "Mystery Division", and as the Hellcats, in the 17 Armored Battalion Infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate Dechau Concentration Camp. He was active in the L.D.S. Church serving for many years with the youth. He was a scout leader, sports coach, and teacher; he loved the youth and taught them to love scouting and become strong young men. Arlo served an L.D.S. Service Mission with his wife, Emelia in 2003 at the Utah State Prison. Arlo was a general contractor, building homes all over the Salt Lake Valley. He loved the outdoors and taught his children and grandchildren that same love. He took his family on many camping, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling trips. Arlo is survived by his wife, Emelia; their four children, A. Jay (Judie) Ward, Leesa (Barry) Harvey, Bradley (DeAnne) Ward and Kyle (Phyllis) Ward; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the L.D.S. Ward Chapel, 3150 West Whitehall Drive (3985 South). The family will receive friends at a viewing Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, and from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the Church. Interment: Valley View Memorial Park.

I'm so sorry, but I have to add another sad message to my other too-often-sent messages. Kim Stott Baren, daughter of Kevin and Barbara Stott, found yesterday that her husband, Jason, had died during the night. It was a complete shock and surprise for he had not been ill. We send our deepest love and condolensces to the Stott Family and to Kim. Kay

Mary Jane Griffith's Slow Cooker Breakfast Casserole

2 lbs. frozen shredded hashbrowns
Large pkg. of shredded cheese
1 red pepper, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
ham, bacon or sausage (or all three!), chopped in pieces
12 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1/2 cup milk

I have been making this for so many years that I don't really have a recipe written down. You can pretty much put whatever you want in this as far as vegetables and meat and such. Depending on the size of your crockpot you will use more or less of the ingredients. It always turns out so yummy!

Spray crockpot with non-stick cooking spray. Chop all meat and vegetables and combine in a bowl. In the crockpot layer some of the hashbrowns, some of the vegetable/meat mixture and some of the cheese. Repeat those layers until your crockpot is full ending with a layer of cheese on the top. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, salt & pepper. Pour this mixture over the top of your layers - it will soak down into the crockpot. Cook on low for about 8 hours or on high for 4. I usually make this at night and let it cook on low until morning.

Melissa Thaxton's Obituary

Melissa Thaxton "Missy" Missy returned peacefully to our Heavenly Father February 18, 2009.She was born April 18, 1971 in Murray, Utah to Arlund T. and Earlene Parkin Thaxton. Missy loved her family and friends unconditionally and brought love into the lives of all she met. Her favorites were her "fuzzy" friends, music, books, swinging sideways and bouncing on the trampoline. She attended and graduated from Hartvigson School. She especially enjoyed participating in the LDS Special Needs Mutual activities and Institute classes. We are very thankful for the 37 years she blessed our lives. She is survived by her parents; grandmother, Ruth S. Parkin; siblings: Connie (Paul) Nutt, Todd (Tammy), Becky (Jason) Kyle, Lisa (Jon) Williams and Tom; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 23, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the West Valley Stake Center, 3963 S. Peachwood Dr. (3480 W.). Friends may call Sunday, February 22nd, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road and Monday at the church, 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.

Bradshaw's New Baby

We want to congratulate Stephanie and Michael Bradshaw on their beautiful new son, Courtland, born February 5th.
Their five boys now make enough players for a basketball team. We are so happy for them.
