In 2009 the previous R.S. Presidency did an activity night based on gardening. I decided to re-publish the following information just in case "Spring" arrives in Utah (West Valley City, to be exact).
Gardening 101
Bart’s Recipe For Growing Tomatoes
1) Prepare the spot with 2-3 inches of organic material, leaves, manure etc.. Sprinkle over leaves 1 (one) Ibs. of 20-0-0 fertilizer per inch of organic material per 10 sq ft of garden area and till until level or furrow area for plants. I cover my tomato garden area with 6 mil black plastic, just a suggestion.
2) Plant tomato plants that are 6-8 in tall as they will transplant better than larger ones ... dig the hole deep enough for the plant, the taller the plant the deeper the hole. Fill with warm water and put plant into water and cover with soil.
3) Add 1/3 cup of 16-16-8 fertilizer to plant in a circle at least 4-6 in away from the plant. Weed and water weekly. Do not add more fertilizer to the plants during the growing season as more nitrogen creates larger plants with fewer Tomatoes. This recipe also works for cukes, squash, melons and other transplants.
AND:
Bart's Recipe for Containerized Tomato's
Horticultural Crops Supervisor at the Utah State Fair and Master Gardener (and resident of West Valley) gave us this special recipe:
1) A clean 5 gal bucket with 8 .oz inch holes drilled in the bottom. Note if a larger container is used, increase the number of holes.
2) Fill container full of potting mix [Greenhouse type] then add 3 Tbs. of 16-16-8 Fertilizer and mix in well. Note: if a larger container is used, add some dirt to the bottom 1/3 of the container before adding the potting mix and increase fertilizer accordingly.
3) Fill container to within 1inch of the top then place one Patio type tomato [Determinant] to the center of the container and pack firmly into soil. Some Indeterminate [Large] Tomato plants can be successfully grown in much larger containers.
4) Add 1/3 cup 16··16-8 to the outer edge of the 5 gal bucket and 8 to 10 in away from the plant when using a larger container.
5) Water well for about one week. Then only as needed.
Note: Plants require at least 6 hours of sunshine to produce.
Add very little if any fertilizer to the container as nitrogen produces lots of vine with few good Home Grown Tomato's.
"GOOD LUCK"-Bart Anderson

The World in our Home
I saw your blog and I'm hoping that you can help me get the word out. We need volunteer host families for exchange students who will arrive this August and be here for the school year. They will all have their own insurance and spending money and they can share a room with a sibling close in age. They will go to the family's local high school. If you can post this on your blog or get it to the bulletin that would be great!
Thanks, Danika

RELIEF SOCIETY NEWS FROM OUR WVC 4TH WARD NEWSLETTER
Belated thanks to those who brought displays of their talents and those who performed for us at our R. S. Talent Show held way back in January!! It was a lot of fun looking at the wide variety of items made by our very talented sisters and enjoying their musical selections. If you missed it, you really missed out! Thanks to Sister Stott, Tiffany and Shaylee for being there for the children’s class… to Brother Richard Butts for his continued help in setting up for us… for his efforts in shoveling the beautiful white snow for us… and to those who help us clean up afterwards!!!
In February, Sister Dorene Lynch prepared a power-point presentation to help us with meal planning ideas. We also were given some ideas on how to make mealtime fun, especially at Valentine’s time. Sister Sarah Holman made a version of a popular game that helps to stimulate family conversations around the dinner table. Hopefully, those who received these have had some fun evenings already. Thanks to those who baked the brownies for us as well!! They were yummy. We appreciated Sister Jaime Holdaway taking charge of the children’s class…and, once again, thanks to Brother Butts, Tiffany and Caitlyn!
A special note of thanks to those who clean the building each and every week!!!
We would like to express our appreciation to Sister Rose Bowen for her thought-provoking and well-presented lessons. She has gone on to enrich the Primary with her talents.
We’d also like to thank Sister Anikka Edwards, who has recently been released, for her diligence and dependability in serving as our Visiting Teaching Coordinator. We’d like to extend a welcome now to Sister KayWilliams who accepted that daunting calling. By now, you probably know that there have been changes made in our visiting teaching district that affect almost everyone. Thank you for being willing to serve the sisters in our ward as we all work toward eternal goals and make new friendships with sisters in our area.
Congratulations to the Carter Holdaway family who have recently been sealed in the Mt.Timpanogos Temple!! They will have added anew member to their ‘forever family’ by the time this newsletter is printed.
Welcome to Kyle Carter Holdaway born on March 11. We wish Sister Jaime Holdaway a speedy recovery.
Over a short period of time, we have learned of several deaths of persons related to many of our ward members, including a former ward member. Our heartfelt condolences go out to you and to your loved ones. We have also learned of serious health challenges recently diagnosed and hospital stays. May those of you who are currently experiencing these challenges and your families be blessed and comforted.
On a more pleasant note, congratulations to Tony and Amanda Duncombe, who were recently married. Tony is the son of Dean and ReNae Duncombe.
We hope many of you sisters were able to join with the Stake Relief Society on Saturday, March 19th at the Stake Center for their activity! They really put a lot of effort into making these special events worthwhile for the sisters in our stake.
Save April 12th for another fun mid-week activity. More info will be forthcoming. Watch for it and plan to come!

APRIL BOOK CLUB
Dear Bibbies:
Spring has sprung (at least my nose thinks so!)and all too soon, we will find ourselves back out in the open, attempting to undo Winter's Wrath upon our yards. . . break out the allergy drugs! You realize, of course, that the first quarter of 2011 is gone!!! NO, I am not April Fooling! You stuck that extra 'blink' in there and 'Expelliarmus,' it is outta here.
Look how quickly each meeting for Book Club comes upon us. It is great that we have such a reprieve to look forward to and rejuvenate our batteries. Our last charging was not an exception ...we were entertained and enlightened with a terrific presentation from Jean Stout on "The Book of Virtues." Very enjoyable, Jean . . . thank you much! It is always fun to be introduced to the many varieties of reading material, sure to keep life interesting.
I think you will find April to be just that . . . very interesting. You know we couldn't go long without a little intrigue and mystery, right?? Ofcourse not!! We will welcome Spring in style, with a Surprise Presentation . . . by a Surprise Presenter! Now don't you go thinking you can lie in wait for me and try to 'mug' the information out of me. Will not happen! You just get your little Biblioholic Bods to the designated place and get in on the surprise with the rest of us!
See . . . you are already wishing away the month of April so you can satisfy your curiosity streak. I'll be there.... will you??
